Local Supply of Donated Blood Running Low After Snowstorm
Miller-Keystone Blood Center has issued an urgent appeal for blood and platelet donations in the wake of winter weather that has resulted in numerous canceled appointments.
“Unfortunately, the recent snowstorms forced us to cancel several community blood drives and modify operating hours at our donor center locations,” MKBC Director of Donor Services Monika Wiegers said in a news release Monday. Wiegers noted that decreases in blood donations are not uncommon in winter, when snow and ice can make traveling to donate blood difficult.
“The winter months are often challenging for community blood centers,” she said. “Holiday activities, increased travel, inclement weather and seasonal illnesses can all prevent people from donating blood. However, accidents and illnesses do not take a break.”
According to the release, the blood bank needs to replenish approximately 350 donations every day in order to meet the needs of local patients, including individuals battling cancer, premature babies and accident victims.
“We’re asking all eligible blood donors to take an hour of their time over the next few days to visit one of our donor center locations (including Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Hamilton, Pittston and Reading, Pa., or Ewing, N.J.) and help bolster the community blood supply,” Wiegers said. “Donating blood is safe and easy, and in just one hour, you can help save as many as three lives, (and) possibly those of a family member, neighbor or friend.”
Through Feb. 28, 2026, Miller-Keystone is once again hosting its annual “Bring A Friend” campaign, which encourages existing MKBC blood donors to invite a family member, friend or colleague who has never donated with the organization before to come with them. After successfully donating, both donors will receive a $25 electronic gift card in appreciation of their support of the only community blood center serving area hospitals.
To schedule an appointment, visit the Miller-Keystone Blood Center website at GIVEaPINT.org, download the MKBC Donor app (available for Apple and Android devices) or call 800-B-A-DONOR (223-6667), ext. 2.
