Bear Sighting in Lower Saucon Confirmed By Police

Lower Saucon Township Police Monday confirmed a sighting of a bear in the 2200 block of Summit Drive, which is off Overlook Drive near Polk Valley Road.

In a post on their Crimewatch site, police shared a trail cam video of the bear lumbering in front of the home where a resident said the bear “destroyed his bird feeder” sometime overnight Sunday.

Police also shared a link to a post about “Living With Black Bears” that is published on the Pennsylvania Game Commission website.

The article notes that while bears typically hibernate in winter, “they may emerge if disturbed.”

Bears are typically more active during the warmer months, and it has been several years since there was a rash of confirmed bear sightings in the Saucon Valley in the summer of 2015.

“If you feed birds during summer (and if you’re living in bear country, you shouldn’t be), you may want to bring all bird feeders, including hummingbird feeders, in at night,” the Game Commission advises.

Trash, birdseed and pet food should be stored inside a building, garage or secure shed, with the doors kept closed.
