No Rain Date Ep. 60: Fighting Food Deserts With Kellyn Foundation
/

On this episode we’re happy to welcome Kellyn Foundation co-founder and Chief Medical Officer Meagan Grega, MD. Launched nearly 15 years ago, the Kellyn Foundation is having a positive impact on local communities through its various initiatives designed to help families “make the healthy choice, the easy choice.” Unfortunately, healthy choices aren’t always easy to make when access to fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and other components of a plant-based diet is restricted, as is the case in the Lehigh Valley’s eight areas with documented characteristics of food deserts. With their “Eat Real Food” Mobile Market, however, Kellyn staff and volunteers are bringing locally-grown, nutritious options directly to the food deserts and the consumers who most need them. Our guest explains how they do that, winning over hearts and minds with a combination of education and delicious food options. Those options include Kellyn Lifestyle Medicine Meals, which are the mobile market’s whole food, plant-based meals. Packed with fiber, phytonutrients and protein, they’re a healthier alternative than what’s typically found in the convenience stores that supply food to food desert residents. Click here to view the market’s summer schedule. As always, Josh has a roundup of local news and happenings.
