Opponents of a proposed landfill expansion in Lower Saucon Township are taking their case to the motoring public by planting yard signs asking them to “Dump the Dump” along busy local roads and at intersections.
State Rep. Robert Freeman, who represents the part of Lower Saucon Township that is home to the Bethlehem Landfill, says township council should oppose a proposed rezoning that would allow for a 275-acre expansion of the facility.

A member of Lower Saucon Township Council resigned Wednesday, after less than five months in office.
Hellertown Area Library Board of Trustees president Ken Solt says in his letter that in spite of a lack of funding from the township, the library will “continue free library services to LST residents for the time being.” Solt also provides insight into conversations with state library officials in which he says it has been learned that the current situation “has no known precedent in the Commonwealth.”
Lower Saucon resident Laura Ray writes that the relationship between Hellertown borough and the township has been “fractured” by the recent actions of the majority on township council with regard to the Hellertown Area Library. “This pack of council members has caused serious damage and they should resign,” Ray says in her letter to the editor.
Lower Saucon Township Manager Leslie Huhn has submitted her letter of resignation to township council. In the letter submitted Wednesday, a copy of which Saucon Source has viewed, Huhn said she is thankful for the opportunities she has had while employed by the township.
Concerns about a 5-year Hellertown Area Library funding agreement were aired by Lower Saucon Township Council members at their meeting Wednesday, with council ultimately voting 4-1 to donate $50,000 to the library less a one-month installment payment made Jan. 1 instead of approving the agreement worth nearly $500,000, while opening up the possibility of a lawsuit against the library if access is denied to residents as a result of Wednesday’s decision.
It wasn’t on the agenda for Monday night’s Lower Saucon Township Council meeting, but about a dozen residents were so concerned following a recent discussion about a proposed five-year agreement with the Hellertown Area Library that they confronted council members with the issue and implored them to continue funding the library.
