A car fire in the parking lot next to the Saucon Manor senior high-rise on Northampton Street in Hellertown Friday afternoon was brought under control by local volunteer fire crews, according to eyewitnesses.

In a photo and video recorded from behind Bella’s Ristorante by Rick Favere, large flames can be seen leaping and black smoke billowing from the silver or tan sedan that was parked on the south side of the building.

“Thankfully (firefighters) got here before it hit the gas tank,” Favere said.

Firefighters were forced to battle the mid-afternoon blaze in bitterly cold temperatures, as highs struggled to reach the mid teens Friday.

There is no word yet on what might have caused the fire, or whether any other vehicles parked nearby were damaged by it.
