Dog Food Recalled Over Salmonella Concerns

Giant Food Stores announced Thursday that following a recall by Tuffy’s Pet Foods Inc., it has removed from sale Nutrisca Chicken & Chick Pea Dog Food due to potential salmonella contamination.

The following product is included in the recall:11741-DEFAULT-l

  • Nutrisca Chicken & Chick Pea Dog Food, 4 lb., UPC 88424412495, with the following first five digits of the Lot Code and Best By Dates:
    • Lot Codes beginning with: 4G29P, 4G31P, 4H01P, 4H04P, 4H05P and 4H06P
    • Best By Dates of: Jul 28 16, Jul 30 16, Jul 31 16, Aug 03 16, Aug 04 16 and Aug 05 16

Giant said in a news release that it has received no reports of pet or human illnesses to date, but the product could be potentially harmful to dogs who ingest it or people who handle it.

“Pet owners should thoroughly wash their hands after having contact with this product and clean any surfaces that were exposed,” the news release said.

Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, whose symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may include chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days. Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.

Customers who have purchased the recalled product should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to a Giant store for a full refund.
