Local Woman Named Nursing Fellow at Johns Hopkins

Est. Read Time: < 1 min

Emily Hangey, a 2009 Southern Lehigh graduate, 2012 Lehigh Carbon Community College graduate and 2014 graduate of Pennsylvania State University–Lehigh Valley, has been selected as one of 20 Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Fuld Fellows for the year 2015. This fellowship draws student applicants from diploma, associate and baccalaureate degree programs nationwide.

Fuld fellowships–established in 1986 and named in honor of Helene Schwab Fuld, mother of nursing advocate Dr. Leonhard Felix Fuld–prepare nursing students to take an active role in influencing national healthcare policies and legislation. Through a yearlong series of programs, Fuld fellows develop leadership skills in the nursing profession by broadening their knowledge of healthcare systems and deepening their understanding of the effects of policy on healthcare delivery and practice.

Ms. Hangey’s leadership training will include course work in the Advancement of Patient Safety and Quality at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, and is designed to prepare her for future leadership at the bedside and in other care settings.

Fuld fellows are given unique opportunities to capitalize on the intellectual and institutional resources that distinguish Johns Hopkins as a leader in healthcare quality and safety. The program provides each fellow with the following: broad, evidence-based, interprofessional education; practical safety learning experiences with Johns Hopkins improvement teams; and mentoring to bridge theory and practice.

Ms. Hangey is set to begin the 13-month accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in June.
