Scout Plans to Install Fishing Line Recycling Containers

A local Boy Scout who’s trying to earn his Eagle Scout merit badge is planning to install recycling receptacles for used fishing line along the Saucon Creek in Hellertown, after receiving permission from borough council Monday to do so.

Council stipulated that Trevor Blackwood work with public works director Tom Henshaw on the placement of the containers, which it is hoped will reduce littering by fishermen along the stream.

“It’ll be nice if the fishermen use them,” Henshaw said.

The fishing line if left along the stream’s grass-covered banks can become tangled in lawnmower blades or end up in the waterway, which is a prized fishing stream.

The containers will be affixed with educational decals that will encourage their use.

“I think it’s really well thought out,” said councilman Herb Payung Jr. of Blackwood’s proposal. “Hopefully we can get the word out around town when they’re ready to use through social media.”

Blackwood said he hopes to have the containers installed by the end of the summer.
