Heat Hits Hellertown

The hottest weather of the 2015 summer season (so far) descended on Hellertown on Sunday, July 19.

Temperatures soared into the 90s in the Saucon Valley Sunday afternoon, with heat indexes of more than 100 degrees. The heat index is a measurement of how the air temperature feels, in combination with the relative humidity.

The National Weather Service has also issued a heat advisory for the Lehigh Valley that is in effect until 10 p.m. Sunday.

A heat advisory is issued when a period of excessive heat is expected, and the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible, according to a statement issued by the NWS.

The sudden onset of the unseasonably hot weather prompted some vendors and emergency vehicle exhibitors to pack up early on the final day of the Dewey Fire Company’s 100th Anniversary carnival at Dimmick Park. But after a cool, cloudy start to the summer, the weekend heat was a boon for the Hellertown Pool, which is open daily until 7pm through late August.

The hot weather is forecast to continue at least into Monday, when high temperatures are again expected to top 90 degrees.
