Apple Slices Recalled

Following a recall by Appeeling Fruit Inc., Giant Food Stores said Thursday that it has removed from sale Appeeling’s precut apple slices due to the potential for them to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The following products are included in the recall:

  • Appeeling Green Apple Slices, 12 oz., UPC 5832400950 with a best if used by date of9/21/2015
  • Appeeling Red Apple Slices, convenience pack of 8, 2 oz. sized bags, UPC 5832408400 with a best if used by date of 9/21/2015
  • Appeeling Red Apple Slices, 12 oz., UPC 5832400900 with a best if used by date of9/12/2015

Giant said in a news release that it has received no reports of illnesses to date.

Consuming food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, which can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes even fatal infections in people with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.

Customers who have purchased a recalled product should discard any unused portions of it and bring their purchase receipt to any Giant store for a full refund.
