Parents, students and staff in the Saucon Valley School District are reacting with shock and sadness Friday morning to the news that a high school student took his own life Thursday night.

bridge-621522_1920In an open letter to the community posted on the district’s website and emailed as a news alert, superintendent Dr. Monica McHale-Small called the boy’s death “tragic” and said “our hearts and thoughts are with the student’s family, friends and loved ones as they cope with this tremendous personal loss.”

“This loss is sure to raise many emotions, concerns and questions from our school community, especially from some of our students,” she said. “Our counselors and school psychologists are present at the high school to provide support, comfort and reassurance to students and staff. Because many students have been impacted by this tragedy, we have additional mental health support personnel present at the high school now.”

For students and parents in need of additional assistance, McHale-Small said to call the high school counseling office at 610-838-7026, ext. 2716.

“We will be posting resources and additional information in the coming hours and days,” she added. “Should your child need support over the weekend, please contact the Northampton County Crisis Intervention 24-hour hotline at (610) 252-9060.”

On Saucon Source’s Facebook page, readers reacted to news of the student’s death with an outpouring of sympathy for the family and all those affected by the tragedy.

“Prayers for all friends, family, staff and teachers,” wrote Melinda Mitchell. “It is so sad when a student believes that suicide is a solution to his or her problems. Many people are left broken. Don’t be afraid to tell an adult or teacher if you suspect someone is contemplating suicide.”
