Sometime towards the end of November, my family will gather together and eat a meal. For us, that’s where any similarities to a traditional Thanksgiving end.

Many in my family are vegetarians so we wind up making some type of pasta dish, and because of work obligations, we often need to move the celebration back a few days…or weeks.

I hosted last year, so it was their turn to be treated to some true culinary delights.

Now let me just preface this by saying the fire was contained…

Yeah, so our ‘Sort of Thanksgiving’ feast of lasagna with all the fixins was interrupted by a visit from the fire department.

It all started while I was baking Monkey bread. (We enjoy the irony of eating meatless food with animal names. This year I’ll be making Opposum Pie.) The overflowing pan caused an oven fire and filled my house with noxious fumes. My life goal is not to have a repeat of last year.

Here are some helpful tips on how to avoid such an eventful Thanksgiving:

  1. So no one takes a header make sure to clear all walkways, sidewalks and straighten or remove area rugs.funny-pictures-676672_1280
  2. Double check that all smoke detectors have new batteries and are fully operational. Some folks disconnect their smoke detectors when they’re preparing a large meal. Please don’t!
  3. Have a fully charged fire extinguisher on hand.
  4. When you can, try to keep pots and pans on the back burners to avoid spills and burns. If that doesn’t work: Bactine.
  5. Never leave cooking food or candles unattended.
  6. Follow recipe cooking fill lines (see, this is where I screwed up).
