A two-vehicle accident at Black River Road and Rt. 378 Monday afternoon sent the female driver of one vehicle to an area hospital, according to a report published by the Morning Call.

The woman was reportedly conscious and alert but suffering from chest pain following the 4:15 p.m. accident in which she struck a utility pole, the newspaper reported, citing police radio dispatches.

A crash photo shared by a reader on the Saucon Source Facebook page shows a black SUV with its front end embedded in the pole. The Speedway gas station is in the background, and township police and first responders are visible on the scene.

When the photo was shared, other readers criticized the intersection for its design and safety record.

“That area is awful,” said Kristy Katz. “If you’re coming from Black River Road (either direction, really) and making a left onto 378, it’s not easy. There’s no left turn signals and it seems most people go straight coming from the side of the Hess station, and the light is super short. If someone in front of you is making a left, there’s a good chance you’ll have to sit through another light before you can make the turn.”

“Making it worse, less than half the cars making a left there use turn signals,” added Rick Shive. “The entrance to Speedway and people waving others out doesn’t help. I deal with this intersection multiple times every day, and wonder (why) there aren’t more accidents.”

The circumstances that led to Monday afternoon’s crash–which tied up traffic in the area until it was cleared–have not yet been described by police.
