Easton Man Charged With Possessing Pipe Bombs in Lower Saucon

Donald Frey, 31, of Easton, was charged Tuesday by indictment with one count of possession of destructive devices, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Zane David Memeger and Northampton County District Attorney John M. Morganelli.

Note: The following story contains information from a March 30, 2016 news release from the Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The DOJ did not detail where the alleged pipe bombs were found, however a story published on Hellertown-Lower Saucon Patch on Jan. 11, 2014 indicates a pipe bomb was allegedly found inside a car that was towed to Saucon Collision–an automotive business on Old Philadelphia Pike in the township. Residents of the area reported hearing two small explosions after a local bomb squad responded to the scene at around 1 a.m., according to information that was shared at the time by Lehigh Valley Breaking News.

Frey is alleged to have knowingly possessed two destructive devices, specifically two pipe bombs, on Jan. 10, 2014, in Lower Saucon Township.

If convicted, Frey faces a maximum possible sentence of 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, a possible fine and a $100 special assessment.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Northampton County District Attorney’s Office and the Lower Saucon Township Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Kelly Lewis Fallenstein.
