A 32-year-old Easton man pleaded guilty to one count of possessing an unregistered destructive device in federal court Wednesday, admitting he placed two pipe bombs in a car that was towed to a Lower Saucon Township auto body shop after it was involved in a crash in January 2014, the Morning Call reported.
The bombs were disabled by the Bethlehem Bomb Squad following their discovery.
Donald Frey, 32, was a passenger in the vehicle owned by a friend, and told Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) investigators he purchased the pipe bombs from a man named “Mike” several weeks before they were found, the newspaper report indicated.
Neither his motive for possessing the bombs nor the identity of the alleged bomb builder were identified in the article.
Frey–who was charged in March–is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 18, and faces up to 10 years in prison, three years of probation and a maximum $100,000 fine.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Northampton County District Attorney’s Office and the Lower Saucon Township Police Department, and was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Kelly Lewis Fallenstein.
