After a close loss Monday, the Saucon Valley golf team led by head coach Scott Roberts is off to a hot start this season.
On Monday, the Panthers dropped a heartbreaker in a head-to-head battle against preseason Colonial League favorite Southern Lehigh, 410-416.
Saucon senior Thomas Coakley led all scorers with his 1-under par 70 effort at Southern Lehigh’s Wedgewood Golf Club in Coppersburg. Coakley’s teammates made a gallant effort to keep pace with the Spartans. Senior Sophia Israel (80), senior Brendan Gertz (81), sophomore Justin Kyra (92) and junior Tommy Gallagher (93) combined with Coakley’s score to break Roberts’ team target score of 420. The Panthers stepped-up and played well, but it just was not enough to overcome the Spartans’ depth.
On Tuesday, Saucon Valley rebounded nicely as the Panthers took to their home “Hill” course at Silver Creek Country Club. With a reputation as one of the most challenging courses in the area, the par 70 “Hill” was not very hospitable to the visiting teams from Bangor, Pen Argyl and Wilson. The Panthers’ top five scores added to a 441, outlasting a tough Bangor squad’s 455. Pen Argyl tallied 476 from their best five scores.
Wilson is rumored to be still counting their strokes.
Coakley again led the way for the Panthers on “the Hill” with a solid 2-over 72. Gertz (89) and Israel (92) once again played key supporting roles in the winning effort. Tuesday’s match also brought Coach Roberts help from sophomore Gage Stelzer (93) and junior Austin Till (95), moving the Panthers to a 3-1 record.
Congrats to the Saucon Valley golfers for their great start. The Source is with you!
