Ofc. Carl Fischer (Hellertown Police Department), Ofc. Kyle Haggerty (Lower Saucon Township Police Department) and Maryann Matey, EMT, accepted care kits for kids made by local Girl Scouts at First UCC in Hellertown Monday.

For a small child, one of the most frightening situations can be something involving police officers and EMS staff, such as a medical emergency.

Children caught up in these types of situations often feel better when they are given a distraction in the form of an activity or craft to work on.

That’s why members of Junior Girl Scout Troop 8523 recently assembled “care kits” for kids that include items such as puzzles, small toys, games, coloring paper, crayons, stickers and tattoos.

The kits will be carried by local police officers in their vehicles as well as EMS, and were presented to representatives from the Hellertown Police Department (Ofc. Carl Fischer), the Lower Saucon Township Police Department (Ofc. Kyle Haggerty), and EMT Maryann Matey at First UCC in Hellertown Monday night. A representative from a local hospital that will be receiving the kits was absent.

Troop leader Angel Zimpfer-Melo said the girls created about 120 kits, with 30 distributed to each organization.

The idea to create the bags came out of efforts by the girls to come up with a project for their Bronze Award.
