The holidays are known as a time when drinking and driving typically spike, and with Christmas falling on a weekend this year, driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs is of special concern to local authorities.
Pennsylvania State Police Troop M announced in a news release Wednesday that their special holiday enforcement period will begin Thursday, Dec. 23 and end at midnight on Monday, Dec. 26.
During this time, roving extra patrols will target drivers who appear to be driving under the influence, drivers who commit moving violations such as speeding or reckless driving, aggressive drivers, and seat belt and child safety seat violations.
During the 2015 holiday enforcement period, state police said Troop M investigated 48 crashes, four of which were determined to be alcohol-related.
