A trolley travels north on Main Street near American Legion Post 397 in Hellertown in this rare 1940s photograph.

Local history buffs will want to mark their calendars for some nostalgic fun and to experience a smooth ride down Main Street (Rt. 412) in Hellertown with local historian and author Daniel Ruth as the tour guide.

Ruth will present vintage home movies shot in Hellertown more than 75 years ago during a presentation Tuesday, March 21 at 7 p.m. at the Hellertown Area Library, 409 Constitution Ave., Hellertown.

The black and white (and some color) home movies will take spectators on a brief tour inside the former Hellertown Bottling Works, Diehl’s Market and Rickett’s Chevrolet, before passing by “The Cup” (an ice cream stand that was shaped like a cup) and other notable businesses that once served the Saucon Valley community.

Also depicted is the Water Street covered bridge, which in the late 1930s was in its final stages of dismantling, as it was to be replaced by a modern concrete span. In the background the Heller Homestead is visible on the west bank of the Saucon Creek.

The special event is jointly presented by the Saucon Valley Woman’s Club and the library.
