Note: The following news release was submitted by Saucon Valley School Board candidate Matt Milliren, who is running in the May 16 primary election. A total of eight candidates–including two incumbents–are running for four open seats on the board. All have been invited to share a statement with Saucon Source readers.

I am a husband, father and homeowner within Hellertown and currently have two daughters attending school at Saucon Valley.

Matt Milliren is a candidate for Saucon Valley School Board.

My oldest daughter is a junior and my youngest is currently in eighth grade at the middle school. I attended Millersville University, where I received a degree in meteorology and I currently work at The Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church P.C.U.S.A in Philadelphia as a Database Administrator.

My family and I are members of First United Church of Christ in Hellertown and I am a member of and President of its consistory. I am serving as the Vice President of the Hellertown Planning Commission and the treasurer of Saucon Valley Music Connection. I am also a volunteer roadie for the Saucon Valley Marching Band.

I am running for school board because I feel that education should be a partnership between teachers, administration and parents. This partnership is essential in developing a strong educational program which in turn produces a strong community. Recent interactions between the school board and other parties have shown that this partnership has broken down, and I want to be a part of correcting this situation.

I also feel that the current board is not pressing the administration for the data to back up their requests. Many items are being pushed through without being given due consideration. My background as a database administrator has taught me to consider the data, analyze it and use the information gleaned to come to a decision.

If elected, I plan on working to foster a working relationship with all parties and to consider the data to make solid and sound decisions that encourage the growth of a strong school system.
