Several months ago Giant Food Stores introduced a new “speedy checkout” or “4th in Line” guarantee to reward some customers who are forced to stand in lines longer than three people deep with free groceries.

The guarantee states: “If there are four or more separate customers in each available checkout line at any time, the fourth customer in line will get their grocery order for free (a customer is considered fourth in line if there are three other customers in every checkout lane with a cashier).”

However, there are some exclusions that may affect your chances of receiving free groceries, even if you are the lucky fourth customer in line.

The “fine print” to the policy, outlined on the Giant website, is as follows:

  • A Checkout Coach (Front End Lead) or member of our Store Management Team will notify the Customer if we fall short of this guarantee.
  • If you were 4th in line, there are 3 other customers in every other manned checkout lane (exclusions apply) and you were not contacted by a Checkout Coach or member of our Store Management Team please contact one of them before you leave the store.
  • Exclusions apply:
    1. You are considered “4th in Line” if there are at least 3 customers in every open checkout lane.
    2. Void if we have every possible lane already open.
    3. Does not apply to self-checkout and/or department registers around perimeter of store such as Pharmacy, Floral, Deli/Café, Beer & Wine Eatery, Fuel Station, etc.
    4. Void if excess lines are due to equipment failure, inclement weather or when an unusually large number of shoppers enters the store (e.g. flash mobs, tour buses).
    5. “Free groceries” will exclude gift cards, alcohol, tobacco and any other item prohibited by law.
    6. All policies are subject to manager discretion.

Locally there are Giant supermarkets located at 1880 Leithsville Road, Hellertown, and 216 E. Fairmount St., Coopersburg.

Have you ever received free groceries as a result of Giant’s speedy checkout guarantee? What was your experience like? Tell us in a comment.
