Crossing an aged local bridge will soon be more difficult for some vehicles, after a weight limit is added to it for safety reasons.

The Springfield Township Police Department announced in a Crimewatch post Tuesday that the two-lane bridge carrying Slifer Valley Road over a branch of Cooks Creek “will soon carry a weight limit of 15 tons (30,000 pounds) for single vehicles and 21 tons (42,000 pounds) for vehicles in combination.”

The bridge is about a mile south of Springtown, near the historic Knechts Covered Bridge.

“An engineering study has been conducted and determined there is structural damage and excessive deterioration of the bridge,” the police department said.

Any vehicles that are over the new weight limits and wish to cross the bridge must fill out Application Form M-4902 via PennDOT’s website and submit it for review prior to crossing.
