The Saucon Valley Girls Soccer Team extended their season record to 8-0 and recorded a seventh shutout with their victory over Moravian Academy Saturday.

The Saucon Valley Girls Soccer Team extended their winning streak to an impressive 8-0 with a decisive win over Moravian Academy Saturday.

The Panthers got off to a strong start when senior Brooke Riefenstahl headed an Appoline Neveu (Junior) corner-kick just inside the near post for the first goal of the contest 11 minutes into the game.

About two minutes later, sophomore Sophia Riehl hit the back of the net on a nice unassisted goal to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

With 11:38 remaining in the first half Kiele Riefenstahl finished an Appoline Neveu feed for another Saucon Valley goal.

The 3-0 Panther advantage held until halftime.

At halftime the Panthers held a 3-0 lead.

After the half the Panthers picked up where they left off when Appoline Neveu finished with a bouncer into the Moravian Academy goal at 27:55.

Sophomore Maria Donahue took a Katherine Naiburg (Senior) pass to score the last goal of the game at 14:49.

Coach Stevie Ochse said her team’s defense was also critical to the win.

“Our defense, led by keeper Zoë Zaharakis, was able to produce our seventh shutout of the season,” she said.

The defense put on by Saucon senior goalkeeper Zoë Zaharakis was key to the team’s win over Moravian Academy Saturday, Coach Stevie Ochse said.

“Offensively, it was nice to have five different players find the back of the net,” Ochse said. “The fact that we have so many scoring threats makes us a tough team to beat.”

“One player in particular who had a nice showing in today’s game was Sophia Riehl, who had nice through balls to her teammates and worked hard to control the midfield,” she noted.

Up Next: On Monday, Saucon Valley (8-0) will host Salisbury (6-1-1). Moravian Academy (5-3-1) travels to Bangor (4-4). The kickoff for both games is at 4 p.m.

Ochse predicted that Monday’s game versus Salisbury will “be another difficult test in Colonial League play.”

About This Series: Andrew & Sonya Hughes of Hellertown are sponsoring girls soccer coverage on Saucon Source to help recognize the achievements of female high school athletes here in Saucon Valley, and in tribute to their own daughters, who were both stand-out student athletes at their high school, where they played softball, soccer, basketball and field hockey. Between the two of them they earned 14 varsity letters in high school. “Female athletics was a big part of our family life for many years, but that journey ended at the high school level six years ago,” Andrew Hughes says. “Through those amazing experiences we also noticed that females don’t seem to have the same level of exposure and support as their male counterparts. So we are very sensitive to situations where we perceive an imbalance of exposure of female student athlete participation in competitive high school sports. We also like to encourage greater involvement of young people in athletics. We would like to help the girls gain more exposure at your news source by adopting some girls high school teams.” Saucon Source thanks Andrew & Sonya Hughes for their thoughtful and generous support of our local sports coverage.

At halftime the Panthers held a 3-0 lead.
