Beef jerky has come a long way from what it once was, and if you don’t believe that, you owe it to yourself to visit Easton House of Jerky, which is owned by Hellertown residents Jason and Gwen Boyle.

Following a soft opening that lasted several weeks, Easton House of Jerky officially opened for business Aug. 1 on a side street about a block-and-a-half from Centre Square.

The refinished space the store occupies has a rustic ambiance, with pallet pieces repurposed as paneling on its walls and chicken wire baskets and wooden boxes holding many of the pouches of jerky visitors can purchase.

And the varieties of jerky that Easton House of Jerky sells are seemingly endless.

For example, beef jerky in 1 oz. packages is available in black pepper, cajun, chipotle bourbon, hot and natural flavors. And if you purchase a 2 oz. package, you’ll have additional flavors from which to choose, including red chili pepper, sweet & spicy, Carolina Reaper and Ghost Pepper, which Jason said is popular with buyers who like their jerky extra hot.

The varieties of beef and turkey jerky the store sells are available in 1 oz., 2 oz. and 4 oz. packages, and less common meat jerkies–including alligator, kangaroo, wild boar and elk–are available in 1.75 oz. and 3 oz. packages.

But the varieties don’t stop there.

Easton House of Jerky stocks truly exotic tastes like duck, whiskey rabbit, snapping turtle, camel, ostrich, shark, and even python, which Jason said is one of the most popular types of jerky the store sells.

For pets there is a jerky that’s formulated specifically as a treat for dogs, and for people who can’t eat wheat there is gluten-free jerky available in a variety of flavors.

Vegan customers can purchase mushroom jerky in flavors such as Applewood BBQ, Zesty Thai and Sea Salt & Pepper, along with jerky-style dehydrated pineapple in brown sugar, cherry and pina colada flavors. And seafood lovers will want to try ahi tuna jerky and salmon jerky.

In addition to the many varieties of jerky it sells, the store also stocks specialty food products like bacon jam and Uncle Bud’s (Shell ‘n All) Peanuts in flavors like Old Bay, Bacon BBQ and Garlic.

Something else that sets Easton House of Jerky apart is that all of the flavors of jerky it stocks are always made to order and shipped fresh, unlike the jerky one might find on a supermarket shelf, the Boyles said.

“Our product is 100 percent natural,” said Jason, adding that the House of Jerky meats aren’t diluted with the use of byproducts or fillers. “It’s 100 percent that animal.”

Although there are other Houses of Jerky throughout the area and beyond, each one is unique because the stores are set up by their individual owner-operators.

House of Jerky is not a franchise, Jason Boyle explained.

So the stores in Jim Thorpe and New Hope may sell a different array of products, based upon the preferences of their clientele.

Along with python, among the exotic varieties Easton House of Jerky sells mako is a big seller, and alligator jerky is the top seller, Jason said, adding that during the popular “Shark Week” television event the store sampled its mako and sriracha shark jerkies.

Samples are always available, although the varieties that are being sampled change regularly.

Easton House of Jerky also goes mobile by participating in numerous events, such as Fall Fest–which was held at Dewey Fire Company in Hellertown in October–and the upcoming Peace Candle Lighting & Small Business Saturday event Nov. 24 in Easton.

“We want to be proactive, not only for the business but also for the community,” Jason said.

The Boyles said they will be offering free shipping on their jerky products during the holiday season, and they can also deliver larger orders locally in the Saucon Valley area.

Easton House of Jerky is located at 13 S. Second St., Easton, Pa., and is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
