In addition to all the rocky fun attendees have enjoyed for generations, there will be something new and different–and of course related to rocks–at the 2019 Lehigh Valley Gem, Mineral & Jewelry Show hosted by the Saucon Valley Lions Club in April.

Show chairwoman Amy Musser announced that this year, a highlight of the show will be Hellertown Rocks Kindness Project rock painting contests for individuals and businesses.

The individual contest will be held at the show.

The official contest rules/instructions for businesses are as follows:

  1. Register for the contest with Amy Musser by calling 484-554-6299, by message through Facebook or by emailing an***************@gm***.com. There is a $10 admission fee, which can be paid with cash or by check made out to Saucon Valley Lions Club.
  2. Find a rock which fits in a five inch square box.
  3. Clean and dry your rock, because paint will better adhere to it if it’s been cleaned and is completely dry.
  4. Be creative by drawing or painting on the rock. The person painting the rock should be the business owner or someone who works at their business.
  5. Submit your creation by April 14 to Amy, or take it to the Lehigh Valley Gem, Mineral & Jewelry Show by 3 p.m. that day. The show is held in the Saucon Valley High School gymnasium on Polk Valley Road in Hellertown.

All creations will be judged by a panel of three judges (one of whom will be Hellertown Mayor David Heintzelman), with winners to be announced between 4 and 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, April 14 at the show. Any business that participates in the contest and/or places an ad in the show’s ad booklet will receive free admission to the show. Please bring the receipt from registration or your ad booklet receipt to show proof.

A cash prize of 50 percent of the money raised for this contest will be given to the winner of the rock painting contest.

The Lehigh Valley Gem, Mineral & Jewelry Show was begun in 1970 by the late Bob Gilman Sr., owner of Lost River Caverns, who was then a Saucon Valley Lions Club member. The show was taken over by Lion Ray Campbell in 1981. After Ray retired in 2013, his daughter Amy took over running the show. Amy is the founder of the Hellertown Rocks Kindness Project, which can be found on Facebook.

“We appreciate your help in making this event a huge success, so that we may continue to support our charities,” said Musser. “We hope you join in our first rock painting contest and come see what the show is all about. Thank you again for your participation.”

The show is the Saucon Valley Lions Club’s biggest annual fundraiser and raises money that goes to support local families in need, the Foundation Fighting Blindness and scholarships for Saucon Valley High School students.
