Lower Saucon Township Police said Sunday that a device found leaning against a tree on the Saucon Rail Trail at Reading Drive Sunday morning was deemed suspicious enough to close the trail and establish a perimeter.

The device was later examined and detonated by a Bethlehem Fire Department bomb squad robot, but it did not contain any explosives, police said in a post published on their Crimewatch website.

Police didn’t say what the item turned out to be.

Residents were advised via the township’s alert system to avoid the trail between Old Mill and Spring Valley roads while the investigation was under way.

Police said they were also assisted at the scene by Northampton County EMA, Lower Saucon EMA, Lower Saucon Fire Rescue, Steel City Volunteer Fire Department, Upper Saucon Township Fire Police and Dewey EMS.

A little more than three hours after police were dispatched to the scene it was cleared at 12:51 p.m. and “there is no threat to the public,” police said.
