The statewide shutdown of non-essential, non-life-sustaining businesses ordered by Gov. Tom Wolf on the advice of public health officials will hopefully contain the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), but along the way has the potential to harm small businesses.
That’s why the Hellertown-Lower Saucon Chamber of Commerce has launched a campaign that urges consumers to support local (#SupportLocal) businesses in ways they may not have done before.
As part of the chamber’s effort, they have created a flyer listing a variety of offers and updates from businesses within the area. This list can be found on the Hellertown-Lower Saucon Chamber’s Facebook page and its website under the “Support Local” tab. With the situation regarding businesses so fluid, the document is being updated daily. For the most up to date version, please visit the Hellertown-Lower Saucon Chamber’s webpage.
The chamber is also encouraging people to #SupportLocal through online activities, such as by playing Small Business Bingo.
“With people home and spending more time on social media, we felt this would be a fun way to encourage people to support local all while spotlighting businesses,” said Jessica O’Donnell, EVP of Affiliated Chambers for the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce.
“We are supporting our local businesses by being a voice for them and also promoting their special offers,” O’Donnell said. “For restaurants, many have curbside pickup and takeout deals. We are using several channels including our social media outlets to encourage our community to continue to support local by purchasing gift cards to be used at a later date or to shop online with our local businesses as many of them have a large online/social media presence.”
Ricky Gower, Chair of the Hellertown-Lower Saucon Chamber Board, agreed.
“These are some unprecedented times for our community, our businesses and our nation,” he said. “We will get on the other side of this—we are a resilient community. We just need to work together to help each other out during a time of great need.”
