Borough Adopts New Garbage Fee Schedule for Some Businesses

Hellertown Borough Council voted to adopt a new sanitation fee schedule Monday that will result in fee changes for some businesses.

Under the new fee schedule, commercial businesses with 2 cubic yard dumpsters will pay $700 per year for once-weekly pickup, $1,050 per year for twice-weekly pickup or $1,400 per year for thrice-weekly pickup.

Commercial businesses with 1.5 cubic yard dumpsters will pay $525 per year for weekly pickup, $1,050 per year for twice-weekly pickup or $1,312 for pickup three times a week.

Borough manager Cathy Hartranft said that under the new fee schedule there will be no changes to the garbage fees paid by residential, home office, low-impact and medium-impact commercial businesses.

The change in the fee structure was made after council first discussed the idea late last year.

Council members and staff agreed that a partial overhaul of the fee schedule was needed, to prevent some customers from subsidizing the cost of others’ collections.
