Q: What’s That Purple Bow For? A: Greater Saucon Relay for Life!

It’s that time of year again.

It’s nearly time for volunteers from Relay for Life of Greater Saucon Bethlehem area to paint Hellertown purple with bows that will be attached to poles along Main Street and other reminders of why their cause is important.

Relay for Life is both a fundraiser for and an awareness tool of the American Cancer Society, which holds the annual event that is open to the public in Hellertown’s Dimmick Park. The purple bow symbolizes the annual event.

This year’s 12-hour relay–endcapped by opening and closing ceremonies at the park bandshell–will be held Saturday, June 1 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., rain or shine.

More than just a walk, ‘Relay’ is a community festival that features vendors, basket raffles, food, live entertainment and fun for the whole family.

“We will have a free dinner for cancer survivors (participants must pre-register), a slide presentation of photos of loved ones who have passed, a luminary ceremony, a first lap led by bagpipes and survivors, a speaker who talks about their experience with cancer, a 50/50 drawing, a silent auction and hourly activities,” said Sponsorship Chairperson Janet Reilly.
