Simmons Tops Beyer in Race for 131st District Seat
Incumbent state representative Justin Simmons (R-131) easily defeated his Democratic opponent, Lower Saucon Township resident Michael Beyer, to win a third term in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, according to unofficial election results published by WFMZ Channel 69 News.
According to the published results, with all 26 of the district’s precincts reporting their vote totals Simmons had captured approximately 61 percent of the vote to Beyer’s 39 percent.
The seat Simmons will retain was formerly held by Michael Beyer’s mother, Karen Beyer, of Lower Saucon Township, who Simmons defeated in the 2010 Republican primary before going on to win the general election.
The 131st District currently includes a small portion of Lower Saucon Township in Northampton County, but because of legislative redistricting it will include a larger portion of Lower Saucon as of Dec. 1. The district also includes Upper Saucon Township, the borough of Coopersburg and Lower Milford Township, which together comprise the Southern Lehigh School District.
Maps that show the current district and the district as it will exist after Dec. 1 are posted on Simmons’ website.
