When a Bethlehem man who was driving to work on Springtown Hill Road early Thursday morning encountered a deer in the road, he swerved to avoid it but “could not correct himself” and crashed into an embankment, Lower Saucon Township Police said in a news release Friday.

According to police, Joseph Eliason, 38, of the 1200 block of Carlisle Street, was driving in the 2200 block of Springtown Hill when the accident occurred at 5:23 a.m.

Police said Eliason claimed that as he was coming around a corner the deer “ran out in the roadway,” and he swerved to avoid hitting it.

Eliason’s vehicle sustained heavy front end damage and was disabled by the crash, police said.

They added that he was taken to a local hospital to be “checked out,” and will be cited for a traffic lane violation.
