What started with a few Saucon Valley families getting together at the Grist Mill on Thanksgiving morning to throw around the football has grown to an annual event that includes over 100 participants.
This Thanksgiving tradition, started in 2011 by Saucon residents Chris and Leigh Ferguson along with Tom and Kerri Johnstone, seems to be getting bigger every year. In addition to the increasing number of participants, the Fergstone Bowl now includes a lined football field as well as a new scoreboard. A “family draft” of interested participants is organized the night before to determine the teams and the games begin 9 a.m. every Thanksgiving morning.
There are four divisions that include coed grades K-6 and coed grades 7-12 for the kids. The other two divisions consist of adult women and adult men. It is supposed to be flag football/two-hand touch but sometimes the competitiveness of the participants prevails and some bodies hit the ground. Luckily, the past five years there have been no serious injuries, but surely there are many achey muscles shortly thereafter.
For the record Team Johnstone leads the overall series 4 to 1 over Team Ferguson. Today, however, Team Ferguson came away as the victors!
A Saucon Source salute to a unique Saucon-style Thanksgiving tradition!
