If weather cooperates, the remaining paving work for the current phase of the Rt. 412 widening project will be completed by mid-December, according to a PennDOT announcement shared by the Borough of Hellertown on its Facebook page.
After the paving’s finished, the road signs will be erected, lines will be painted, and concrete sidewalk work and side road tie-ins will be completed.
“Weather pending, we are looking at opening (the) southbound lanes right before Christmas,” PennDOT said.
In the spring, contractor HRI Inc. “will complete the final roadway paving surface, median concrete islands, tree plantings, final traffic signal work, highway lighting and any other miscellaneous work,” they added. “This project should be completely finished by end of summer 2016.”
The $36 million widening project began nearly three years ago, and has generated consternation among residents and business owners in Hellertown because of the parking disruptions and traffic tie-ups it has caused at the borough’s north end.
