Saucon Valley head coach, Chad Shirk, seemed a little uneasy going into the Panther-Pirate match up last night. He recognized Palisades as “a talented team with a lot of wrestlers ranked in the state.”
Well, if the Palisades Pirates are a talented team (which they are) what does last night’s performance say about the 2016 Panthers? The Pirates came in determined to do what no Colonial League team has done since 2011. The Pirates were looking for a win, but Saucon Valley sent them home last night with a very entertaining 45-13 pounding. It was an exciting night filled with skilled wrestling and hard-fought battles. Saucon’s quest for a fourth consecutive Colonial League title continues.
The Panthers won 10 of the 14 bouts getting pins form Nick Rosengrant (106), Nate Kehs (170) and Trey Polak (285). In addition, Saucon picked up forfeit victories from Dylon Yonney (160) and Devin Fontanez (220).
The Panthers also earned decisions from Josh Jones (120), Jack Hill (126), Angelo Mahaffey (138), Nathan Harka (152) and Blayne Hirschbeck (182).
For his efforts in an 8-2 decision over hard-nosed Nathan Haubert, Saucon senior Jack Hill was named “wrestler of the match”. Hill was able to keep Haubert on the defensive and convert three tenacious takedowns along the way to his victory.
Looking forward Coach Shirk offered, “We are coming into the heart of the season. We must continue to improve and stay healthy. The Colonial League Duals and District Championship is fast approaching.”
There is no time to rest for Saucon Valley. Their journey continues tonight at 7 p.m. The Panthers must quickly refocus and drive to Wilson to take on an improved Warrior program.
Good Luck Panthers! The Source is with you.
