Saucon’s Scrivanich Wins National Title at Fargo

In addition to being a polite and well-mannered sixteen year old rising junior at Saucon Valley High School, Liam Scrivanich is a talented wrestler for the Panthers.  Last year as a sophomore during the 2020-2021 high school wrestling season, Liam quietly crept into the spotlight as a PIAA state qualifier in the 160-pound weight class.  Although he went two-and-out with his first trip to states, Liam continued to refine and develop his craft throughout the spring and early summer. Last week his efforts reaped reward as Scrivanich earned himself the trip to the top of a podium in Fargo, North Dakota.  Liam willed his way to beat the rest of the 160-pound field and become the 2021 U16 National Champion in Greco-Roman wrestling.

SV Wrestling Club Celebrates Another Season Of Success

It was a slightly watered-down setting at the Steel Club on Sunday as the Saucon Valley Wrestling Club celebrated another season of success.  Missing from the annual event were the members of the youth program who, due to COVID concerns, had their Valley Elementary Wrestling League (VEWL)  season cancelled.  Nonetheless, those present relived and rejoiced with another memorable year of wrestling success.

Panthers Move Three To PIAA State Championships

Last weekend, the Saucon Valley Panthers advanced four wrestlers into the PIAA Super-Regional tournament which was hosted by Pottsville High School on Saturday.  With a top-four finish in the Super-Regional, a trip to Hershey was on the line for a chance to compete for State Title. It was mixed results, especially early-on, for the Panthers.  Fortunately for Saucon, it's not how you start, it's how you finish.

Panther Wrestlers Advance Four in PIAA Tourney

Five Saucon Valley wrestlers fought their way out of the District XI championships last weekend to advance into Saturday's PIAA Southeast Regional Tournament.  Four of those five have now qualified to compete in a "COVID Era" PIAA East Super-Regional.  Liam Scrivanich (160), Jake Jones (172), Ty Csencsits (189) and Dante Mahaffey (215) each battled their way through the field to keep their wrestling seasons alive by securing a top-five finish.  Scrivanich and Jones are sophomores, Csencsits and Mahaffey are juniors.  Junior Cael Markle (145), unfortunately fell in the blood-round to finish sixth overall.  Only the top five advance.

Csencsits, Mahaffey Bring Home District XI Wrestling Gold!

At the end of the Sunday session Saucon Valley juniors Ty Csencsits (189) and Dante Mahaffey (215) left the Chrin Center as 2021 District XI Champions.  Cael Markle (145), Liam Scrivanich (160) and Jake Jones (172) finished as runner-ups.  All five punched their ticket to the PIAA Southeast Regional competition that will be held  Saturday at Central Dauphin East High School.

Panther Wrestling District XI Wrap-up: Day One

In the year of COVID-19 Chad Shirk and his Saucon Valley Panthers have successfully, yet precariously, navigated their way around the pandemic and into the District XI individual championships.  Hosted by the Charles Chrin Center in Palmer Township and with doors closed to all spectators, the Panthers took to the mat for the opening day of the two-day tourney.  On the other side of it all, the top two wrestlers in each of the thirteen weight classes will advance to the PIAA Southeast Regional next Saturday at Central Dauphin East High School.

Chewin’ the Fat: Q & A With The Lady Panther Wrestlers

About two weeks ago at Palisades High School, Panther senior Sophia Riehl grabbed the spotlight as the first female in Saucon Valley's rich wrestling history to get a win in formal competition on the wrestling mat.  And....Wow!, she certainly did it with style.  Riehl circled and stood her ground, fought off a shot, locked up a Cement-Job and packed her Pirate opponent in the first minute of her bout.  Riehl's contribution that night sparked her Panther brothers to defeat Palisades 46-15.

Saucon Valley Breaks Bangor

Chad Shirk's Saucon Valley Panthers concluded the regular wrestling season on Saturday with a morning tussle at Bangor.  After dropping their season opener to Notre Dame two weeks ago, Bangor was riding a wave of success with six consecutive wins.  On paper, this looked as if it would be an entertaining matchup.

Panther Power Sinks Pirates

Just two nights after defeating the Southern Lehigh Spartans, Saucon Valley hit the road and travelled to Palisades for a Wednesday night fight with the Pirates.  The Panthers anxiously made the trip in what figured to be a competitive scrap in many bouts.  With a lineup that features six solid seniors, the Pirates proved to be a tough test for the Panthers.

Panthers Prevail In Saucon Creek Smackdown

On Monday night, Saucon Valley wrestling played host to their crosstown rivals, Southern Lehigh.  No matter the sport being played when these two proud programs collide, there is usually a little more riding on the outcome than a tally in the win column.  However, this time around the Panthers pinned their way through the youthful Spartan lineup and held onto bragging rights for at least one more year.
