The Saucon Valley Theatre Department will present the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” March 3-6, in competition for the Lehigh Valley’s annual Freddy Awards. But as the nearly 100 student actors, crew and musicians prepare for opening night, they are also arranging a wonderful night of food and entertainment for the senior citizens and families of Lower Saucon Township and the Hellertown community.
On Thursday, March 3, family members and senior citizens will travel back to the 1920s with a leisurely “speakeasy” style dinner including cabaret style entertainment and jazz music provided by the Saucon Valley High School Drama Club. Following dinner, guests will enjoy the “Millie” performance in the high school auditorium. The dinner, served by Saucon Valley students in 1920s waitstaff attire, will include baked ziti, chicken marsala, salad, rolls, coffee, tea and desserts, and cast members will be making an appearance as well.
The Saucon Valley Drama Department together with the Saucon Valley Performing Arts Association is arranging the special dinner event and has invited guests–including senior citizens, free of charge–as an outreach to the community and families of Saucon Valley. The event is now SOLD OUT, at over 150 guests, including seniors from area retirement homes, churches and the Hellertown/Lower Saucon community.
Saucon Theatre Director Chad Miller commented that, “during a brief conversation with our Athletic Coordinator, Mr. Bob Frey, an idea was born to use the power of the arts to reach out to the senior citizens within our community. The SV Performing Arts Association and cast members loved this idea and thus the Speakeasy Dinner was created. This is a wonderful opportunity to share our talents while giving back to such an important facet of the Saucon Valley community. To me, this event is the essence of what it means when people talk about ‘the Power of the Arts.’”
Although the dinner event is sold out, there are still tickets available for the performances on March 3, 4 and 5 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m.
