Robert K. Matey, 86, of Hellertown, died Monday, April 4, 2016 at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of JoAnna Staly Matey and the late Georgine M. (Dugan) Matey, who died June 17, 1988. He was born in Bethlehem on June 7, 1929 to the late Joseph Matey and Margaret A. (Horwath) Matey. Robert served our country faithfully in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He owned and operated the Robert K. Matey Agency, Hellertown, for 43 years until his retirement in 1997. He was employed with the PA Department of Transportation from 1960 to 1984; he was a past Magisterial District Judge in Hellertown, Plant Patrolman at the former Bethlehem Steel and worked in 1953 with his parents at the Matey’s Crossroads Hotel. He had also worked at a gas station during high school. Bob was a member of Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Colesville; Edward H. Ackerman American Legion Post 397, Hellertown for 59 years; Hellertown Lions Club for 30 years and a recipient of their Melvin Jones Fellowship Award; Lehigh University Wrestling Club for over 40 years; and a past member of the Goodfellows and Southside Boosters Club. He became a licensed real estate agent in August 1954. He received a BS degree in 1951 in economics and business administration from Moravian College and completed graduate work in income tax and business courses at Lehigh University. He was a graduate of Liberty High School, Class of 1946, and attended Washington Junior High School and Broadhead School, Bethlehem.

In addition to his loving wife of 18 years; daughters: Suzanne M. Matey of Hellertown, Doreen M. Matey wife of Mark A. Bujanowski of Hellertown, Jana M. wife of Gerald J. Labelle Sr. of Center Valley; grandchildren: Kelli A. Bujanowski and Gerald J. (Jake) Labelle Jr.; stepdaughter: Mitzi Ann Hamm of Macungie; step-grandchildren: Jessica Rae and Derek Allen Hamm, Zachary Joseph Dengler. He was predeceased by a brother: Raymond A. Matey.
SERVICE
Family and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 7, 2016 at the Heintzelman Funeral Home Inc., 326 Main St., Hellertown. The service will be held at 9:45 a.m. Friday at the funeral home and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at the church, 4101 Old Bethlehem Pike, Bethlehem.
