Hellertown Police are investigating the theft of scrap copper and a commercial air conditioning unit from the driveway behind a home on W. Saucon Street, according to the homeowner who was the victim of the alleged theft.

The resident told Saucon Source the theft occurred Saturday afternoon, when a man with black hair and a dark complexion, standing about 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall, pulled into the alleyway behind her home and loaded the items into his vehicle, which was a white sedan (possibly a Toyota or Nissan).

Blurry footage of the incident was captured by a neighbor’s video surveillance system.

The resident said the incident unfolded at about 4:45 p.m., while she was at home with her children, and encouraged others in the borough to “be sure your doors are locked and nothing valuable is left outside.”

The theft was discovered by her husband when he returned home a short time later.

“While outside, the same car and person came around obviously looking for more,” she said. “We didn’t know it was the same car until we looked at the surveillance.”

The money from the sale of the metal was going to be used by the family for summer fun, but more than the monetary loss, “we are upset and concerned about this happening in broad daylight,” she said.

Borough police were contacted and are investgating the theft, she confirmed.
