The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at 6 p.m. to discuss IESI Bethlehem Landfill’s proposed Southeastern Expansion.

The meeting will be held at the Saucon Valley High School auditorium, 2097 Polk Valley Road, Hellertown. There may be a possible quorum of Lower Saucon Township Council members in attendance.

IESI Bethlehem Landfill on Applebutter Road is requesting an expansion of 6 acres, with 22.5 acres overtopping existing landfill areas.

The company filed its original expansion application on Jan. 21, 2015. The DEP held its first public meeting on June 22, 2015 to answer questions about the permit application and then held a public hearing on April 13, 2016 to take public testimony. An environmental assessment of the application was issued by the department on April 17, 2017.

A copy of IESI’s permit application can be viewed at DEP’s Northeast Regional Office located at 2 Public Square, Wilkes-Barre, or the DEP’s Bethlehem District Office located at 4530 Bath Pike, Bethlehem. Those wishing to make an appointment to view the documents can do so between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. by calling the Northeast Regional Office at 570-826-2511 or the Bethlehem District Office at 610-861-2070.

Individuals in need of an accommodation as provided for in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 should contact Colleen Connolly, or make accommodations through the Pennsylvania AT&T Relay Service at 1-800-654-5984 (TDD).

The area at left would become part of the Lower Saucon Township landfill if IESI’s Southeastern Expansion plan is ultimately approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. (FILE PHOTO)
