Panther Wrestlers Stay Perfect And Earn #1 Seed In Monday’s League Tourney (Brought To You By Spirk Brothers Inc.)

It was a safe bet that when Saucon Valley took the mat at Palisades on Wednesday night that the Panthers would leave victorious. Palisades could not field a full lineup and, well…Saucon is really good. Anyway, there were no stop-the-press surprises as the Panthers (18-0) had an early night and left with a 64-12 victory.

Saucon was awarded six forfeit points each to Dane Druckenmiller (106), Kevin Dyer (113), Justin Kyra (138), Jarrett Hirschbeck (182) and Nick Warnke (285) to get things going.  This one was over before it started.

In addition to the forfeits, Nick Rosengrant (132), Braydyn Lugardo (170), Dane Csencsits (195) and Jared Harka (220) all recorded falls for Saucon.   The Panther pancakes were highlighted by Dane Csencsits’ pin of Pirate senior Jack Donnelly. Donnelly is a tough customer who turned heads with his 7th place finish at Council Rock South’s rugged Escape the Rock tournament earlier this month. Csencsits rode a 4-2 lead into the second period when he used an arm-bar to turn, and then flatten Donnelly for the fall.

Csencsits bars it up and looks for the turn.

Saucon Valley also picked up bonus points from Jason and Josh Jones.  The bash-brothers each won by technical-fall.  I guess Jason, a senior, wins the dinner-table bragging rights as his 15-0 tech-fall happened in the 1st period. Josh, a junior, looked great and was methodical finishing with an 18-3 second period victory.

Jason Jones rolling his way to an 18-3 tech-fall.

Junior, Josh Jones was in total control on his way to a tech-fall.

Saucon Valley did give up a forfeit at 120 and lost a couple of close decisions.  Saucon may have been edged out in a couple bouts, but in true Panther fashion they went down swinging.  Angelo Mahaffey (152) was in battle-mode but fell short by a 4-2 score to Pirate junior, Nathan Haubert.  Haubert placed 4th in the PIAA State Championships last season.  Thomas Spirk (160) kept grinding but ultimately ran out of gas against junior Adam Marsh who is on track to reach 100 career wins.

Palisades’ Nathan Haubert will not soon forget the toughness of Angelo Mahaffey.

Panther sophomore Thomas Spirk emptied the tank and left all his effort on the mat.

Varsity Wrestler of the Match:  Sophomore, Dane Csencists was named wrestler of the match for his 2nd period fall over Jack Donnelly. Donnelly, a senior, is a tough customer who was a medalist at the Escape the Rock tournament two weeks ago.

Junior High Score:  SV 78, Palisades 18.

Junior High Wrestler of the Match:  8th grader Connor Nicholas earned “Wrestler of the Match” honors for his performance against the Pirates .

With four Panther pins and two tech-falls, it was not uncommon to see Pirate wrestlers on their backs.

Up Next:  The 18-0 Panthers will put it all on the line in the 2018 Colonial League Championship at Catasauqua High School on Monday night.  The likely scenario is that #1 Saucon will face #4 Bangor.  While #2 Northwestern Lehigh will have #3 Wilson. The semifinals are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the winners competing for the title at 7:30 p.m.  If the Panthers clear these next two hurdles, they will lay claim to a 6th consecutive Colonial League title!

Good luck Panthers, the Source is with you!
