Save money and help protect local streams by building your own rain barrel in which to collect water at a collaborative community workshop May 5 in Lower Saucon Township.
The workshop is being sponsored by the Saucon Creek Watershed Association and Lower Saucon Township’s Environmental Advisory Council.
Rain barrels are a great water-saving device and ideal for gardens. The barrel sits underneath a downspout to collect water from the roof during each rain event. The water can then be saved and used to water plants in your yard, which helps preserve groundwater resources. Rain water is also higher quality water for plants, and its use will help lower your water and sewer bills (if you have public utilities). Using rain water also reduces the amount of pollution that is picked up by storm water as it passes over driveways and roads before entering local streams and rivers.
Workshop attendees will be guided through the building of their own rain barrel.
No tools necessary, and all parts will be provided. The cost is $35 for the complete kit and participation in the build-it-workshop. Payment can be by cash or check made payable to WCLV.
The workshop will take place at Seidersville Hall, 3700 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bethlehem, Pa., on Saturday, May 5, 2018. Building will start in three shifts: 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. (It takes about 30 minutes to build a barrel.)
Registration is required, as space is limited. The registration deadline is May 1, 2018..
Contact Keri Maxfield at km**@en***.net to register and indicate which time you’d like to attend. A confirmation email will be sent to you.
