A Saucon Valley senior was the recipient last week of a large and prestigious academic scholarship.

Andrew Wieder of Lower Saucon Township was presented with the $165,200 Army ROTC scholarship by Army ROTC representatives from the U.S. Army Cadet Command at Fort Knox at the high school’s annual scholarship and sports awards ceremony May 29.

Wieder, a member of the Civil Air Patrol who recently completed a 22-mile Memorial Day trek in support of veteran suicide awareness, will attend DeSales University in the fall where he will study criminal justice and homeland security.

The scholarship for four years of tuition will be supplemented by a matching scholarship from the university that will pay for his room and board, for a total scholarship package of nearly $225,000, his father, Bryon Wieder, said.

Wieder will graduate with 200 other classmates at commencement exercises Friday, June 10 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Saucon senior Andrew Wieder, center, receives his scholarship check from Army ROTC representatives at the Saucon Valley High School senior award and recognition ceremony May 29.
