Hellertown Councilman Applies to Fill Vacant County Council Seat

A member of Hellertown Borough Council for less than a year, councilman Kevin Lott could soon have a new title–Northampton County councilman–if he is appointed to fill a vacancy Thursday.

A member of Hellertown Borough Council for less than a year, councilman Kevin Lott could soon have a new title: Northampton County councilman.

According to a Morning Call story published Wednesday, Lott, a labor union business agent, was the only person to apply for the vacancy created when county councilman Ken Kraft recently resigned his District 1 seat to become the deputy director of corrections at Northampton County Prison.

District 1 includes the borough of Hellertown, Freemansburg borough, the city of Bethlehem (Northampton County portion) and Hanover Township, Northampton County.

Lott, who is also a Lehigh Valley Planning Commission member, told the newspaper that if appointed to county council he would work to make smarter development a priority.

County council may vote on Lott’s appointment at its Thursday, Oct. 18 meeting, or it has the option to seek more candidates to fill the vacancy, although that does not appear likely to happen, according to the story.

Lott was elected to a full four-year term on Hellertown Borough Council in November 2017 and began serving on council in January.

His application to fill the county council vacancy was not publicly discussed at borough council’s meeting Monday.
