The Fountain Hill Wawa was closed for major renovations from Nov. 6 to Dec. 12. It reopened with sleek new fixtures, brighter lighting, a public restroom and more.

For Fountain Hill residents a month-plus wait for their “new” Wawa finally came to an end when the renovated convenience store at 1429 Broadway in the borough reopened with a new look, a new layout and even a public restroom on Wednesday, Dec. 12.

The regional chain is in the midst of renovating many of its older stores, and at 42 years old, the Fountain Hill store is not only one of the oldest, but also one of the smallest remaining. It is also one of the busiest and has won awards for its customer service.

The remodeling didn’t substantially increase its footprint, but visitors might feel as if the store is larger than it was before because of new lighting and updated product placement.

The store is also now equipped with the latest and flashiest flatscreens displaying Wawa menus and more.

Its walls are covered with sleek subway tile and its counters have been updated with faux wood paneling.

As a way of thanking the store’s customers for their patience during the renovations–which began Nov. 6 and took five days longer than expected–Wawa has been giving out free cups of coffee (any size) at the Fountain Hill location, which is open 24 hours a day.

Customers who would like to purchase gas will still have to travel to a different Wawa, as the Fountain Hill store does not sell gasoline.

The opening of the remodeled Fountain Hill Wawa coincided with the grand opening last week of a huge flagship company store in center city Philadelphia, across the street from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

The biggest Wawa in the world opened with great fanfare Friday, according to Philly.com, which reported that the Eagles pep band performed music, the theme from the iconic Philadelphia movie “Rocky” was played and mascots including the Wawa “Goose” were on hand to greet customers.

The 11,500 square-foot Center City store is located in the former Public Ledger building at Sixth and Chestnut streets.
