The Subway restaurant in the Creekside Marketplace shopping center in Lower Saucon Township is expected to close by Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Two Subway sandwich shops in the Saucon Valley and Southern Lehigh areas will soon close, Saucon Source has exclusively learned.

The two restaurants are located at 1862 Leithsville Road (Rt. 412) in the Creekside Marketplace Shopping Center in Lower Saucon Township (Hellertown) and at 216 E. Fairmont Street in the Giant shopping center in Coopersburg.

Both offer a menu that includes their signature custom-made subs, chips, drinks and cookies, as well as catering options. The Coopersburg store also has a drive-thru.

When reached by phone Monday afternoon, the owner of the two eateries said he had made the decision to close the two stores because they aren’t making money and have racked up too much debt.

He said the Lower Saucon Township Subway he owns will close within the next day, while the Coopersburg Subway may remain open a bit longer.

The stores will reopen under the ownership of a new Subway franchisee, who will be chosen by the Subway corporation, the owner, Tommy, stated.

Tommy declined to give his last name and said he didn’t know who that person will be.

Franchisee information does not appear on the front windows of the two restaurants and efforts to identify the owner by his full name have so far been unsuccessful.

Readers began reporting problems at the stores to Saucon Source over the last few weeks.

Last Wednesday, the Hellertown Subway was out of most meats and cheeses, an employee said, because a final order that was to have been placed did not go through.

The apologetic employee, who didn’t wish to be named, said at the time that she was unsure whether or not another order would be placed.

Two days later, a different employee of the same store affixed handwritten signs listing the meats, cheeses and other items the store was out of to the glass sandwich counter case.

Both employees said they had never met the owner and were under the impression that the stores would soon be closing, but were unsure when that would happen.

On Monday, a reader reported that a sign has been taped to the door of the Hellertown Subway stating that it was now accepting cash payment only.

The Subway located in the Saucon Square shopping center on Rt. 378 in Lower Saucon Township will not be affected by the closing of the other nearby stores. It is owned by a different franchisee.
