A simple sign was taped to the door to inform customers that the Speedway gas station and convenience store in Coopersburg has gone out of business.

Motorists who stopped by a well-known Coopersburg gas station to fill up Tuesday were met with a surprise in the form of a “closed” sign.

The sign announcing the gas station’s permanent closure was displayed on the front door of Speedway on Rt. 309 (N. Third Street) at Fairview Street.

Inside the store the sounds of workers could be heard, but the windows and doors were covered with paper so whatever activity was occurring couldn’t be observed.

Dumpsters and a pickup truck with a trailer hitched to it were visible outside, where the Speedway sign had been removed from along Rt. 309.

It was unclear why the store closed. The company operates a number of other gas station-convenience stores in the area, including stores on Rt. 378 in Lower Saucon Township and Broadway in South Bethlehem.

Speedway was one of numerous gas stations along the commercial strip that bisects the borough of Coopersburg. Others include Giant, Turkey Hill, US Gas and Exxon. Just up the road, in Upper Saucon Township, a Wawa that opened in February 2022 also sells gas to the thousands of motorists who travel the corridor daily, along with prepared foods, beer, snacks and other items.

Speedway Coopersburg

The Speedway at 308 N. Third Street (Rt. 309) in Coopersburg has closed its doors for good. The gas station’s last day serving customers was Monday, May 6.

The Speedway name was no longer displayed anywhere on the property as of Tuesday evening. Above, the pole that supported the gas station’s sign is visible along Rt. 309.

Some type of work was taking place inside the buiding Tuesday evening, as sounds could clearly be heard from outside. Paper covered the windows of the former Speedway convenience store and dumpsters sat next to it.
