Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority (LANTA) is launching ValleyRide, a new fare collection system designed to make riding the bus easier and more affordable. Set to roll out next spring, the system will introduce fare-capping, allowing riders to save on daily and monthly passes without paying upfront costs.
According to LANTA Executive Director Owen O’Neil, ValleyRide will streamline the fare collection process, reduce boarding times and improve overall efficiency. “With ValleyRide we are introducing a more efficient, user-friendly experience for both riders and bus operators,” O’Neil stated.
Riders can choose to pay fares using a SmartCard or an online-based account linked to their smartphone. While cash payments will still be accepted on buses, they will not be connected to a SmartCard or ValleyRide account.
The SmartCards will function similarly to those used by many fast food chains, offering automatic or manual refilling options. Riders can purchase SmartCards online or at select locations throughout the Lehigh Valley.
One of the key features of ValleyRide is fare-capping. This system automatically adjusts fares to the lowest available rate based on the number of trips taken within a given period. This means riders can take advantage of daily or monthly pass savings without committing to higher upfront costs.
The launch of ValleyRide is part of LANTA’s Moving LANTA Forward initiative, which has already seen the successful implementation of the Green Line and Blue Line Enhanced Bus Service (EBS) routes. These EBS routes provide faster and more frequent service between major destinations in the Lehigh Valley.
