Hellertown Bakery opened in April 2016 with a goal of serving the local market for baked goods such as cupcakes and cookies. The business at 612 Main Street in Hellertown apparently closed for good sometime after Nov. 30, shortly before its owner was served a notice to quit due to rent being in arrears. In recent days, customers expecting to pick up orders of baked goods have expressed frustration over unanswered phone calls to the bakery.

A local bakery has apparently closed its doors for good, leaving customers concerned about the status of holiday orders they have placed.

Saucon Source has learned from a reliable source that Hellertown Bakery owner Leiane McCarty has moved out of the area, reportedly relocating to Tennessee.

The newest post on the bakery’s Facebook page, dated Nov. 30, gives no indication that the bakery would be closing. Prior to that, the page’s feed shows new posts appearing on a regular basis.

As of Friday there was no sign announcing a decision to close the business on its front door or window area. On the business’s back door a “notice to quit” dated Dec. 7, 2024 was posted, in which McCarty is ordered by her landlord to pay nearly $5,000 in overdue rent within 15 days.

“If after your 15 days expire and you have not made contact or attempted to get your balance paid, I will be forced to file a landlord/tenant complaint to Northampton County courthouse,” it said.

Property owner Anthony Monaco also stated in the letter that McCarty owes “back rent” from as long ago as 2018 and is responsible for late fees and bank charges he previously incurred “from…many bad checks stamped insufficient funds.”

In response to the Nov. 30 Facebook post–a photo of a multi-tiered white cake–several customers sounding nervous about their orders said they have been unable to reach anyone at the bakery.

“I’ve been trying to call them for days,” wrote one woman on Thursday. “(I) finally went to the store. Open light on, doors locked, mail built up on floor.”

The business “looks abandoned,” she said. “I ordered and paid for a half sheet cake for Dec. 14. Now I’m concerned about them. Does anyone know anything?”

“Calling for days, no answer, open sign lit, locked up tight?!” another customer asked last week. “Where are they?”

The same customer wrote an update on Thursday in which she said she had finally purchased a cake from a local supermarket, after her efforts to reach Hellertown Bakery proved fruitless.

A third customer related a similar experience to the others’ in a one-star Google review published last week. “Does not answer phone calls, or messages on Facebook,” she said. “Doors are locked when times say they are open.”

On Friday afternoon, Saucon Source called the bakery at the number listed on its Facebook page: 610-838-1025. The call went unanswered and it wasn’t possible to leave a message. “Memory is full,” said an automated recording. “Enter the remote access code. The bakery was also dark and appeared deserted, although according to a business hours sign it is supposed to be open until 6 p.m on Fridays. Unsold desserts were visible on shelves inside a glass case in the store.

Hellertown Bakery opened in April 2016 and sold a variety of products, including custom cakes, pastries, cookies, bread and coffee.

In addition to the local supermarket’s bakery department, area residents who frequented Hellertown Bakery now have another option. An independently-owned bakery–Allie’s Specialties–recently opened in the Shoppes at Hellertown on Main Street.

Hellertown Bakery

Hellertown Bakery was dark on Friday afternoon, when it should normally be open, according to a sign. The bakery at 612 Main Street apparently closed sometime during the last two weeks with little if any effort made to notify customers, some of whom may still be expecting their orders of baked goods to be filled for the holidays.

According to its business hours sign, Hellertown Bakery should normally be open on Friday afternoon.

A Dec. 7 letter affixed to the bakery’s back door warns owner Leiane McCarty that her business could face legal consequences if she fails to promptly pay nearly $5,000 in overdue rent that is owed to the landlord.

Hellertown Bakery

Hellertown Bakery was apparently shuttered in a hurry, without a full emptying out of its perishable food products. On Friday, a glass display case still contained baked goods such as blueberry cheese strudel and cupcakes.
