Nearly seven years after the Northampton County-owned crossing was closed, work is progressing on a replacement span for the former Meadows Road Bridge in Lower Saucon Township.

The original bridge built in 1858 was a single-lane, stone humpback bridge, and was closed due to structural issues in April 2018. It was later demolished after additional deterioration and after officials determined that it was unsalvageable.

Construction on the span began last summer and now involves a large crane located on the north side of the Saucon Creek.

According to a PennDOT update shared by Lower Saucon Township councilwoman Priscilla deLeon on Facebook last week, the project has an estimated completion date of June 17, 2026, and an estimated cost of approximately $3.2 million.

Located just west of Rt. 412 (Leithsville Road) near the south end of Hellertown, Meadows Road is an important thoroughfare for east and westbound traffic through the Saucon Valley area. A traffic detour that has been in place since the former bridge was closed to traffic utilizes Main Street and W. Walnut Street/Skibo Road in Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township.
