Police: 2 Cars Collide on I-78 After Third Stops for ‘Unknown Reason’

Pennsylvania State Police at Belfast said they investigated an accident on I-78 in Lower Saucon Township last month that occurred when a driver stopped in the middle of the highway for an unknown reason.

According to a May 3 accident report, the crash happened April 8 at mile marker 69.9 on the Rt. 33 south ramp to I-78 west.

Police said that shortly before 8 a.m., the driver of an unidentified vehicle who was westbound in the ramp’s left lane stopped in the middle of the lane for “an unknown reason.”

The driver of the car behind him was able to stop without causing a collision, but a third driver drove into the second vehicle that had stopped, the report indicated.

The driver of the vehicle that stopped for an unknown reason left the scene without providing information, police said.

The vehicle that was rear-ended sustained minor contact damage, according to police, and the vehicle that struck it sustained what police termed “major disabling contact damage” and had to be towed from the scene.

Police said the 25-year-old driver of the Acura that sustained major damage was issued a citation for following too closely.

No injuries were reported.
